Royal College of Nursing Wales – Nurse Staffing Levels Webinars 2020

The Nurse Staffing Levels (Wales) Act 2016 placed a legal duty on Health Boards and NHS Trusts to regard the appropriate levels of nurse staffing in all settings. Section 25B of the Nurse Staffing Levels (Wales) Act 2016 placed a specific duty on adults’ acute medical and surgical settings to calculated and maintained safe nursing levels, according to specified methodology.

Research showed poor nurse staffing levels increased mortality by up to 26% compared to better staffed wards. The Nurse Staffing Levels (Wales) Act 2016 protect and empowers patients by reducing the length of in-patient stays through minimize trips, slips and falls; decrease rates of infection and sores, and reduce mortality.

Royal College of Nursing Wales is campaigning to:

  • Extend Section 25B of the Nurse Staffing Levels (Wales) Act 2016 to children and mental health inpatient wards, care homes and the community.
  • Increase the number of commissioned nurse student places in all fields of nursing
